Art in Calabria: Sonore Alchimie in Davoli

Art may not be the first thing you think of when you think of Calabria, but once you lift up the stone, you'll find art in Calabria everywhere. Where better to create works of art than a place with such inspiring beauty?

One of the best events to attend in the summer if you love art is Sonore Alchimie, in the village of Davoli.

Paintings, Sculpture, & Collage. Oh My!

This two-day fest is spread throughout the mountain village of Davoli. The artwork of a dozen artists can be found in doorways, stairwells, and wine cellars, and half the fun is discovering what might be around the next corner.

This year, there were larger-than-life photographs affixed to a house, a concrete sculpture of Medusa standing in a doorway, an interactive sound exhibit in a wine cellar, and more. I (Su) had my first art piece on display at the event as well! My showcase was a collaged image of the goddess Athena, accompanied by her wise owl and shield.

Something for Everyone

In addition to the art, there were musical and theatrical performances throughout the two evenings. An Italian American actor gave a commedia d'arte performance that had the audience chuckling, and a local poet, Elisa Longo, read some of her moving poems accompanied by music.

There were plenty of activities to keep the kiddies engaged. Early in the evening, children filled a street with their own art on the sidewalk. And Clown Fòfo had the bambini squealing with delight with his magic show, and later a performance using bubbles.

And no Calabrian festa would be complete without food and drink! Visitors indulged in salsiccia, pasta, and patatine washed down with beer.

Planning for Next Year

Sonore Alchimie is held each year in late July. Get updates from the organization that puts it on, Creativi Indipendenti Davolesi. They're also on Facebook and Instagram.
