Catoi Sotto le Stelle: A Night of Music, Food, and Most Importantly, Wine

Davoli, like many Calabrian villages, has several festivals and events in the summer. You learned about Sonore Alchimie a few weeks ago on the blog, and now we'll look at another popular event in Calabria: Catoi Sotto le Stelle.

First, What's a Catoi?

Because Calabria was once Magna Grecia (ancient Greece), it should come as no surprise that the word catoi is derived from the Greek language. It refers to a chamber under a house that, in Calabria, traditionally held wine and/or oil.

Today's catoi are just as likely to be where people store their garden tools and boxes, but once a year in Davoli, they take center stage for a special event.

And Why is it Under the Stars?

August 10 is a day honoring San Lorenzo, a saint who was burned to death in 258 AD for being Christian. The date is also one where you're likely to see shooting stars in the heavens. The connection? The shooting stars are said to be San Lorenzo's tears!

You Mentioned Wine...

On August 10 each summer, the inhabitants of Davoli who own catoi open them up and invite the public to sample their wine. It's all homemade, which provides a fantastic opportunity to try rustic, real-deal Calabrian vino.

The event is one of good cheer, not consumerism, so you'll find the glasses of wine quite reasonable at €1-1.50 per glass!

There are also vendors selling all types of Calabrian delicacies, including zeppole, fritelle, trippa, salsiccia, and products made from locally harvested chestnuts.

Get There Early

Each year, this event becomes more and more popular, and by 10 pm, the narrow streets are filled with revelers, street musicians, and cranky children.

The earlier you arrive, the easier it will be to find parking, since the main streets of the village are closed for the event.

Catoi Sotto le Stelle celebrates Davoli's joie di vivre (or the Italian equivalent). It's a fantastic opportunity to meet locals and try Calabrian wine and food!
